What Is the Latarjet Procedure?

The Latarjet procedure was developed by the French and has gained popularity in the United States in the last decade.  The procedure is  most commonly performed where there has been significant bone loss due to shoulder dislocations or from a failed previous instability repair.  In this procedure, the coracoid bone (a small bone in your shoulder) is taken from its location and transferred to the shoulder socket and therefore deepening the socket and thus restoring shoulder stability. The surgeon will use screws to hold the bone in place. The result is a much more stable shoulder that will prevent future dislocations caused by bone loss. For most patients, they prevent instability in 94-99% of cases.
